Appleseed 2004

So Appleseed and its sequal Ex machina (i won’t be mentioning the latter here) were an impulse buy, i thought; Why the fuck not? they were cheap enough and it didn’t let me down. Appleseed is an action sci fi and that is exactly what you get, there is a little character development but it sort of just happens rather than any stretched out scenes but the movie is all action.

Being sci fi you obviously get new technology and during the scene screenshotted above it is mentioned how the cars are flooating which is a nice change as with sci fi the technology is just there with no explanation as in ‘that world’ its usually the norm. A mention to the mechas in the show as they look like Mothers with baby carriers when a person gets in.

Art and animation is one of the best parts of the show, its made in entirely CG graphics while the characters are cell shaded this allows flawless animation and the backgrounds look beautiful. There is a down side to the cell shading and that was the faces didn’t show a lot of emotion when perhaps they would normally and i always found the hair to be a little stiff.

Sound was decent, not the best part of the show but the music all seemed to fit the scenes well whether is was a panning of the city or an action scene. I watched the dub and the voices were ok, the acting wasn’t wooden and the script seemed well written so no complaints.

Overall it is an enjoyable watch with a lot of action that because of the cell shading was smooth and just fun to watch but there wasn’t long enough action scenes as they were over pretty quickly.
